Old town centre of Tours

The old town centre of Tours ‘Vieux-Tours’ is the most tourist area of Tours. It is located in the heart of the town, in an east-west axle around the rue du commerce, the rue Colbert and the rue du grand marché.

Vieux Tours is known for its many medieval half-timbered houses. The place Plumereau is the centre of the district of Vieux-Tours. Several houses needed to be demolished for its extension in 1895. On the pedestrian square, also called the ‘Place Plume’, you’ll find many bars and restaurants today, visited by the inhabitants of Tours (mainly the students at night) and the tourists. Prior to the renovation of the square, it counted more shops than restaurants. It has been listed as a monument since 1935 and it counts several half-timbered houses from the 15th century that are listed as historical monuments.
